Hi!

I am dumbfounded by the lack of internet safety software available for free. I mean, if developers can produce a distro of GNU/Linux for every taste possible, surely keeping kids from harm in the web is also a worthy project. A few parental control software I found so far ....

Found some too?

Hi,

I have recently heard of netnanny this is also supposed to be a really good software for parental control and many households are using this:

Also another good website with useful information on making the internet safe is:

I doubt you will find many free softwares because the developers know that parents serious about protecting their child from dangers on the internet would not mind paying for the software. The same is the case with Anti-virus softwares.

@ princess

NetNanny is good but it's paid. There's a lot more free antivirus and anti-spyware software out there than for safe surfing.

@ devil

Right, but it could become a hobby or something for a software developer, just like spybot. Keeping kids safe is certainly as important as keeping PCs safe. Smiley

Yeah I have to agree with Devil976, I certainly would prefer paying for software to protect my child on the internet and most parents I know pay for software rather than looking for free downloads or software, protecting my child on the internet is far more important than keeping my computer safe IMO.

There must be good free alternatives but I dont think that they would be better than the paid ones. New ways of bypassing these things are developed constantly and the developers have to try to stay one step ahead of them. They have to work 24/7. In such a case I'd trust a paid software more than free software because if something goes wrong the I'll get instant support from the developer of the paid software whereas most free software comes without any warranty.

Even if we have state of the art blocking and filtering technology, the only way parents can control their kids is through good example and constant interactions.

How about we have the government approve one, and fund it, and make a law that says that bypassing the software using scrips on your website will get you charged with child welfare endangerment. Same with people that have porn sites that are mispellings of things like Pokemon and Harry Potter.

Hi Dartz

I disagree with you on involving the government into educating our kids; this area should be the private sanctum of the parents; also no filtering software is going to completely do the job like a human parent Smiley Wink Cheesy
